We don’t really need a sequel for Disney Pixar’s Up, but the studio has been able to bring back characters with shorts like Dug Days. This Valentine’s will actually see Carl and Dug returning with a new Dug Days short, and it will have Carl going on his first date since he lost Ellie.
The synopsis for the short reads (via @DisneyAPromos):
“Carl reluctantly agrees to go on a date with a lady friend—but admittedly has no idea how dating works nowadays. Ever the helpful friend, Dug steps in to calm Carl’s pre-date jitters and offer some tips.”
This is admittedly an interesting premise for a short in regards to the character of Carl. With his movie all about letting go of his wife, it’s going to be interesting to see him go into the senior dating world; I guess we couldn’t expect him to just keep hanging out with Russell.
Already some fans online are acting like their grandpa’s going to go out and date strange women, but I think it’s actually a cute idea for the character to go on an innocent date. We don’t expect it to have any huge cathartic moments, but it’s going to be fun to see Dug and Carl again.
Speaking of Carl, we did lose his voice actor Ed Asner back in 2021, so fans are wondering if the Carl in the short is going to be voice by him. Did they have Asner record it before he died? Or is he going to be completely silent? Knowing Disney, they would probably use that Mandalorian tech to have a computer come up with an imitation of Asner’s voice.
I’m not saying they’ll do that, I’m just saying they can.
Dug Days: Carl’s Date comes to Disney+ on Feb. 10. In the meantime, you can check out Dug Days now on Disney+.
