Director Ari Aster has been behind some of the most celebrated horror films with Midsommar and Hereditary, but he’s set to go a different genre with Beau is Afraid starring Joaquin Phoenix. The movie is set to come out later this month, and we have a new trailer that might give us a better idea about the story.
Check this out:
Here’s the official description:
“A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer-director Ari Aster.”
The marketing for the film has admittedly been vague, but the movie doesn’t seem to be a horror film like what we can usually expect from a director like Aster. Now it seems that this film could be closer to something like Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind with the trippy visuals going alongside some inner character turmoil.
Aster has described the film, “I wanted to make a film where it feels like you’ve been through a life—or even through a person… It’s like a Jewish Lord of the Rings, but he’s just going to his mom’s house.”
With a lot of fans excited for Phoenix’s Joker return with Folie a Deux, Beau is Afraid should be another interesting character study featuring another powerhouse performance from Phoenix. Hopefully A24 manages to keep the film’s plot a mystery until it actually comes out in theaters.
Beau is Afraid comes to theaters on April 21.
