Joaquin Phoenix Stars in Bonkers Trailer for Ari Aster’s Beau is Afraid

Ari Aster had delivered instant horror classics with Hereditary and Midsommar, but now he’s gearing up to deliver another unique film with Beau is Afraid starring Joaquin Phoenix. The film is set to come out this April, and we just got a crazy new trailer.

Watch this:

The trailer is admittedly pretty wild and confusing, but A24 had released an official synopsis which reads:

“A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer-director Ari Aster.”

Though it looks like Phoenix is going to be pulling a Nutty Professor and play multiple roles in the movie, the movie also stars Nathan Lane, Patty LuPone, Amy Ryan, Parker Posey, Michael Gandolfini, Richard Kind, and more.

With Aster being known for his disturbing horror movies, Beau is Afraid kind of feels like a change of pace, with the colourful palette, and kind of dramatic tone. We don’t know what kind of story Aster is trying to tell now, but I am actually up for him trying to switch genres from time to time. I’m sure no director wants to place themselves in a creative box.

Then again, even with the bright and colourful trailer, I have a feeling that Aster is still aiming to get everyone creeped out when they get to the cinema expecting to watch this film.

Beau is Afraid is slated for a theatrical release on April 21.
