Last year saw the end of Nickelodeon’s TMNT series that was started back in 2012, but it looks like Nick is not giving fans time to miss the turtles as they’ve announced a new, revamped version of the show called Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Check out the trailer:

It’s worth noting that this series will find the most drastic change that have ever been done with the TMNT formula. This time around, Raphael is now the leader with Leo taking the sidelines. We’ll also get our first African-American version of April O’Neil.

Each turtle is portrayed as a different species, and none of them will hold their traditional weapons—save for Donatello, who will be wielding a multi-purpose bo staff. This time around, Leo will wield a single blade in lieu of his twin swords, Raph has traded in his sai for tonfa, and Mikey will be using a weapon called a kusari-fundo.

Initial reactions for the trailer have been mixed, with the like/dislike meter cut in half. Some may abhor the changing of the classic formula, but I’m actually eager to see what new thing they could bring to the table this time around. It’s worth noting that this series is a prequel, so we could be seeing the characters grow into the classic turtles we all know and love by the end.

There is still no specific release date for Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but the show is expected to debut on Nick this year.
