The first Frozen movie never really explained why Elsa had ice powers, but it was something that the audience never really questioned so much. With the sequel though, the movie is going to try and explain why she has her abilities, and a new trailer has been dropped to clue us in on the plot.

Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough.
As you can see, Elsa isn’t the only magical thing about the world, and we also have the return of the trolls, as well as some kind of sparkly horse that could have something to do with Elsa’s origin. As confirmed, the movie will have the Arendelle Sisters and their friends travelling to an enchanted forest, and maybe we could get the origin of Elsa’s powers and maybe what also happened with their parents.
Personally, I never thought Frozen was the best thing to come out of Walt Disney Animation recently (unlike Zootopia), but this new story looks to take the film in a more mature direction. After all, the little kids who grew up watching Frozen have aged quite a bit, and if anything, this movie is for them.
