It was 2010 when studio Gainax released the first season of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, and the series has since earned a cult status among anime fans. Though the franchise has been dormant for a decade, Studio Trigger (Darling in the Franxx, Kill la Kill) has revealed that they will be delivering a new season of Panty & Stocking.
Here was the video reveal for New Panty and Stocking (tentative title) at the Anime Expo panel:
The video actually features clips from the first season, and according to Anime News Network, original Panty & Stocking designer Shigeto Koyama will also be returning to work on the show.
In the original Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Panty and Stocking are angels who have been kicked out of heaven because of their bad behavior, and they have been sent to Daten City, a place between heaven and hell swimming in evil spirits who are called ghosts.
Together, the ”Anarchy Sisters” with the help of reverend Garterbelt, use their special powers of transforming their lingerie into weapons to earn ‘Heaven Coins’ and buy their way back to paradise; if only they could stop themselves from being sidetracked from their interests like men and sweet desserts.
The staff during the panel did admit that a show like Panty & Stocking may have a hard time getting published today, but with its cult status among anime fans, it’s hard not to come back to the visually dazzling world of Daten City.
Hopefully we get an update later in the year. No release date has been set for New Panty and Stocking.
