Johnny Depp’s recent reputation has definitely been a blow to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and a lot of word has been going around that Disney has multiple options to move forward with POTC with or without him; but rumor is now going around that they’ve made their decision.
According to The DisInsider, Disney is apparently pushing forward with the next Pirates movie, and Depp is onboard. No further details have been revealed, but it has been rumoured for a while that Disney actually had multiple options to tackle the next POTC movie—one of which was said to have Margot Robbie (Barbie) as the new lead.
Admittedly, though Depp has been included in every Pirates of the Caribbean movie, the critical reception of the films have just been going downward since its last high which was At World’s End. Though Depp still had some enthusiasm in the Jack Sparrow character on Stranger Tides, it does seem like he was just going through the motions in Dead Men Tell No Tales—constantly slurring his speech and lacking any of the fire that Jack had in the earlier films.
Personally I was hoping that they would give the Jack Sparrow character a break for a while, and some have said that the real people behind the success of the franchise isn’t Depp, but director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. I just really think that Depp has to get back on his feet with smaller projects first before being thrust into the big-budget world of Pirates of the Caribbean again.
No release date has been announced for the next Pirates of the Caribbean film.
