Netflix had just given us a first look at their live-action One Piece a few weeks ago, and they’ve confirmed that the series is set to come out sometime this year. Though we don’t have an official release date yet, a leak suggests that we could have the show sometime after summer.
What’s On Netflix reports that the live-action One Piece series could premiere on the platform on Thursday, August 31. So far, nothing official has been confirmed by Netflix, but the release does make sense, what with the film’s sparse marketing as of now.
Here’s the description for the live-action One Piece:
An alternate version of Earth, and one that is currently in the midst of the ‘Golden Age of Pirates’. Ruthless cut-throat pirates rule the seas, and only the strongest have the chance to lay claim to the mythical treasure known as ‘One Piece’ that was left behind by the greatest pirate of them all Gol D. Roger.
Years after the death of Gold Roger, a young boy by the name of Monkey D. Luffy has dreams of raising his own crew, finding One Piece, and declaring himself as Pirate King. After eating a devil fruit that grants Luffy the power to make his body like rubber, it gives him enormous strength and agility. When Luffy finally comes of age, he sets sail from Foosha Village in East Blue and sets upon his grand adventure to become the next Pirate King.
Since the series spends a lot of its time with Luffy gathering his crew one member at a time, it looks like the first season will focus on him finding Zoro, Nami, Sanji, and Usopp. We should expect Luffy to find Chopper as well, but seeing as they could be bringing him to life with CG, they could be holding him back for the next season.
With the crazy visuals and action of One Piece, I’m really curious if the series is going to be able to catch up. I mean, building the world is one thing, but the show will need a ridiculous CG budget if they want to replicate the fight scenes in live-action.
No official release date has been announced for Netflix’s live-action One Piece, but the show is expected to premiere sometime this year.
