Nimona may have originally been cancelled, but Netflix managed to pick the film up, and now it’s nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
To help promote the movie, Netflix has officially released the film movie on Youtube for everyone to watch for free. Here’s the link:
We don’t know if this free movie will be on the platform indefinitely, but I think it’s safe to guess that fans will be able to check this film out as long as we’re in the full height of awards season. Here’s the official description:
When a knight in a futuristic medieval world is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona — a mischievous teen who happens to be a shapeshifting creature he’s sworn to destroy.
With the recent rise of punk rock girl projects like Moxie, Nimona pretty much takes that rebellious teen personality and channels it into a shapeshifting fantasy girl. Nimona actually started out as a webcomic from author ND Stevenson which officially ran from 2012 to 2014, with an official comic releasing in 2015.
I’ll admit, some of the animation isn’t Disney/Pixar-level detailed, but the story of Nimona is pretty solid, and audiences will grow to love the chemistry between Nimona and the knight Sir Ballister. We don’t know if a sequel could be in the works down the line, but with enough buzz I think Nimona could very well be the next How to Train Your Dragon franchise.
Nimona is now available to watch on Youtube and on Netflix.
