Mortal Kombat was a franchise that defined the 90s, and the movies have been primed for a reboot for quite some time. WB is set to release the new Mortal Kombat next week, and we have a new featurette delving into the evolution of ‘kombat’ onscreen.
While we do get an expanded look at scenes that appeared in past previews, this featurette actually has some new footage. For one, we get to see Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) outside of the ninja get-up, and we see him going face-to-face with Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada); he even sports a scar on his face, just like Sub-Zero in the game, but fans of the franchise will know that the scar should run through one of his eyes. Then again, fans are also aware that there are two Sub-Zeroes.
Lewis Tan’s character has also been a huge mystery in the film, and we get to see him in what looks to be full-body armor, wielding tonfas. No character in the MK games has these characteristics together, so it’s very possible that Tan is playing an entirely new fighter for the film. It would be interesting though, if they manage to find a way to reveal him as someone familiar by the end of the film.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. I’m still convinced that he’s going to adopt a stage name in the end and become franchise pretty-boy Johnny Cage.
Mortal Kombat is set to hit HBO Max and theaters on the same day April 23.
