The Mortal Kombat movie from 2021 may not have been perfect, but it was able to generate enough interest that a sequel has been greenlit. The film is currently undergoing production, and producer Todd Garner has teased the return of fan-favorite character, Scorpion.

That is no doubt the kunai used by Scorpion, who was played by Hiroyuki Sanada in the first film. With Sanada not expected to come back for the sequel though, a lot of fans are wondering just who this weapon could belong to.
With the character of Cole Young (Lewis Tan) being confirmed as a descendant of Scorpion, it’s possible that he could very much take up that mantle in the sequel. After all, a lot of fans weren’t really keen on his power set of being able to summon body armor. Then again, I always thought that Cole should have just become Johnny Cage and just adopt the stage name by the end of the film.
For now, the sequel is set to go into the Outworld with the arrival of Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), Queen Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen) and Quan Chi (Damon Herriman). No doubt the biggest name added to the cast is The Boys star Karl Urban who will be playing the franchise’s comic relief, Johnny Cage.
As for returning characters, we have Cole, Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), and Jax (Mehcad Brooks). Confusingly enough, characters who died in the first film like Kano (Josh Lawson), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), and Kung Lao (Max Huang), are also expected to return.
The Mortal Kombat sequel still has no official release date.
