X-Men ’97 may have been caught in a snag when showrunner Beau DeMayo was fired right before the premiere, but reviews for the series have been sparkling, and the X-Men are back, bigger than ever.
With X-Men just being one of the bigger Marvel properties of the 90s, fans were wondering if other shows from that era were going to get a revival, and it just might be possible.
As per a Discord Q&A with insider Alex Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), Marvel is currently thinking of making a ‘90s Animated Universe’ which will be explored via X-Men ’97. When asked if there was a chance we could see the return of animated versions of Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, The Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man, Perez replied:
There have been discussions about exploring a Marvel 90s animated universe, which would most likely be explored through X-Men ’97 at this time. There is potential for more projects to be developed within this universe, the most likely candidate being a sequel series to Spider-Man: The Animated Series, but this is still very early in development as an idea being tossed around.
For context, here’s the intro for 90s’ Spider-Man: The Animated Series:
With the original series having their own cameo appearances from other heroes, it’s very likely that X-Men ’97 could be doing the same thing—especially with how Marvel has been treating cameos in all their recent projects.
With another Spider-Man animated series in the works, I’m not sure if a revival of 90s Spider-Man would be a smart decision, but if it’s just a cameo appearance in X-Men ’97, I guess it wouldn’t feel like it was trying to overshadow the new Spider-Man show.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. For now, catch X-Men ’97 now streaming on Disney+.
