With The Super Mario Bros. Movie making upwards of a billion in the box office, studios are currently scrambling for the next big kid-friendly video game adaptation.
Minecraft is set to come out next year, and the first teaser has been dropped with a cast that includes Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Emma Myers. Check this out:
The official description reads:
Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.
To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.
The movie reunited Black with Nacho Libre director Jared Hess who is probably best known for his cult movie Napoleon Dynamite. Admittedly, he has been in kind of a director slump, but hopefully Minecraft will be able to rejuvenate interest in his career.
As for the film itself, we don’t really get to see much, but it does seem like the game is embracing the actual rules of the ‘Overworld’ when it comes to gathering materials and crafting.
I’ll admit, some of the characters look kind of weird—Momoa specifically, but seeing as how Hess has a very unique sense when it comes to characters, it does seem like Momoa sporting bangs does seem like something he would want to put onscreen.
A Minecraft Movie is set to release in theaters April 4, 2025.
