Jump Into the World of MerPeople in Trailer for Netflix Docu

Disney may be releasing their live-action take on The Little Mermaid later this month, but Netflix has their own mermaid film that could be worth checking out.

Here’s the trailer for the MerPeople documentary:

The official description reads:

MerPeople dives into the fascinating world of underwater performers who have turned their love for the mystical sea creatures into real-world careers. From putting on dazzling small-town shows in Florida to the crowning of the King and Queen of the Seas in the Bahamas, this series will take you on a journey of passion and perseverance. Get ready to set sail on an unforgettable voyage and immerse yourself in a world where fantasy becomes reality.

Mermaids are hard enough to pull-off on the big screen, but it’s kind of fascinating just how much work can go into being a live-action mermaid performer. The performance doesn’t just stop at wearing a shiny tail; as the merpeople also need to have extensive waterproof makeup, water dancing skills, and abilities to convince audiences they’re an actual fantasy creature come to life—not to mention they also have to know how to hold their breaths for a ridiculously long time.

This actually looks like an interesting docu, and I’d definitely love to see the ins and outs of a very niche market of performers. Let’s hope they get hired for The Little Mermaid II should Disney decide to adapt that movie.

MerPeople premieres on Netflix on May 23, just three days before the theatrical release of The Little Mermaid.
