Ben Affleck’s solo Batman film came under fire several days ago following statements made by American Psycho writer, Bret Easton Ellis. According to him, Affleck’s script for the film was a mess last he heard. However, Ellis later reneged the rumor he began, saying he has “no idea what the Batman script is like.” The DCEU has been hit with rumors like this before, most notably one regarding Wonder Woman that Patty Jenkins quickly dismissed. One the Universe’s newest members is speaking out about the film, as well. In doing so, Joe Manganiello has yet again offered an interesting tease on what fans should expect.
During an appearance on Mark Madden’s Radio Show (via CBR), the Deathstroke actor said the following:
“When I met Ben we sat down and we talked about, you know, the role, we talked about the movie. His take is a fresh take but I think the audience is going to be surprised, because it’s a road that no one’s really gone down that’s completely integral to, you know, who Batman is. And I think it’s gonna be refreshing but at the same time completely familiar. But it’s going to take this franchise in a direction that I think A lot of people are going to be really happy about. It’s going to be gritty and action packed and cerebral and all of those elements that people love about Batman.”
Manganiello’s praise for Ben Affleck doesn’t stop there. He also lauded Affleck’s work as a award-winning director and writer:
“Ben’s a great director, man. I mean the last movie that man directed won best picture. He’s got an Oscar for writing. Like, this is all the components to go down as a… everything is lined up for a really really really great movie. Not only a superhero movie but just a great great movie.”
The soon-to-be on screen mercenary has a point. With Ben Affleck directing and co-writing alongside Geoff Johns, the Batman solo oozes potential brilliance. What this new, but familiar take will be remains to be seen. Details regarding the plot, setting, and supporting cast is in speculation overload; yet nothing has been confirmed. With Justice League opening in theaters next Fall, solo Batman movie news can’t be too far off.
