The Dungeons & Dragons movie may just be chalked up to an expensive cult movie, but it looks like Hasbro is ready for some more fantasy films.
According to Deadline, a Magic: The Gathering movie is apparently in the works, and they’re looking at Matt Johnson (BlackBerry) to direct. So far no official offer has been made, but it’s said that the film is still in very early stages of development. For context, here’s a look at Johnson’s hit film:
Legendary and Hasbro are said to be aiming to give Magic a movie and TV franchise, and this film would be what kickstarts it all.
Magic: The Gathering (or MTG) was launched back in 1993 and is considered to be the first trading card game. Over years the tabletop classic has managed to amass 50 million fans and has been a longtime favorite for fantasy gamers. Besides its own original world, the game has also done collaborations with other IP like Dungeons & Dragons as well as Lord of the Rings.
We don’t know what kind of format the movie will make, but I wouldn’t mind a unique telling of how Magic: The Gathering was created. With this movie expecting to be a franchise though, it’s possible that it’s going to be a full-on fantasy flick. Let’s just hope they manage to draw a larger audience than what Honor Among Thieves was able to do.
Maybe they should market it better to kids? It’s still insane how A Minecraft Movie was able to do so well.
No release date has been announced for the Magic: The Gathering movie.
