It has taken a couple of years, but director George Miller is finally moving forward with a follow-up to Mad Max: Fury Road. Furiosa will be a prequel telling the story of Charlize Theron’s character, and news has it that the film has found its principal cast.
According to Collider, Anya Taylor-Joy, who has been rumoured for the part, has officially been cast as the young Furiosa. Word also has it that stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen, Aquaman) have been cast in the film as well. We don’t know which roles they could play, but I can imagine both playing either ally or villain.
It would also be great if they can have Hugh Keays-Byrne come back as Immortan Joe, but it would have to depend on how close the story will be to the events of Fury Road.
Though Anya Taylor-Joy was cast, Miller at one point wanted to have Theron play the role and just de-age the actress with CG. He told The New York Times:
“For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet… Despite the valiant attempts on ‘The Irishman,’ I think there’s still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particular Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe.”
While everyone was eager for a follow-up to Mad Max when the film came out in 2015, a legal dispute between Miller and WB had halted the progress of the movie. For now though, it looks like everything has been worked out, and Miller is back to work on the Wasteland.
No release date has been set for Furiosa.
