It’s been a long wait since the release of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and now Disney+ is ready to premiere their Loki series. With Disney taking small steps toward representation, it’s recently been confirmed that the series will have the God of Mischief identify as genderfluid.
Talking to Inverse, series writer Michael Waldron talks about how they took a lot of care when it comes to portraying Loki’s gender. He says:
“I know how many people identify with Loki in particular and are eager for that representation, especially with this character… We worked really hard.”
While the character is ‘coming out’ as genderfluid in the show, it’s actually something that’s been portrayed in the comics before; as well as the official Norse mythology. Loki actor himself Tom HIddleston has said, “It’s always been there in the comics for some time and in the history of the character for hundreds, if not thousands of years.”
With Disney being called out for queer-baiting before, it’s very likely that the Loki series will be more specific when it comes to its portrayal onscreen. It’s no mistake that a promo photo from Loki has the character’s sex labelled as ‘fluid’ and some think that this could be a hint at Lady Loki, who is said to be making her debut in the series.
After The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’s return to the Marvel formula, a lot of fans are hoping that Loki manages to set itself apart from previously released Marvel shows. It’s going to be interesting to see how time is meddled with, and fans are hoping we get some great cameos down the line.
Catch Loki when it premieres on Disney+ on June 9.
