DreamWorks may have closed the book on Hiccup and Toothless back in 2019, but now they’re set to retell the story in live-action with How to Train Your Dragon coming out later this year. I guess if it works for Disney, why not some other hit animated projects?
A trailer has just dropped, and it gives us a look at a lot of classic scenes from the original film like the meeting between Hiccup and Toothless as well as their first flight. Check the trailer for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon out:
Just like the Disney live-action remakes, it looks like the film is also going to be recreating several iconic setpieces—only they’re going to be a tad greyer this time around. As someone who isn’t really a fan of these direct remakes, I just hope that they managed to add some newer scenes that should make this version of the story stand-out.
With How to Train Your Dragon being a successful film on its own right though, it’s doubtful that this movie can find something to ‘fix’ this time around. I just hope that they manage to find some interesting places to interpret the story differently—like how The Last of Us on HBO changed story beats but still stayed true to the themes and narrative.
Here’s the official description for the film:
On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society.
With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding.
As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader.
Catch How to Train Your Dragon when it comes to cinemas on June 13.
