Live-Action Gundam Movie Back in Development

Live-Action Gundam Movie Back in Development

It was back in 2018 when it was announced that there was a live-action Gundam movie in the works from Legendary Entertainment and Bandai, but years have passed with no significant update—until now.

According to Gundam.Info, Bandai Namco and Legendary Entertainment have agreed on an investment for the Hollywood live-action Gundam movie. No details have been revealed about the story or cast, but it has been confirmed that the movie will be written and directed by Jim Mickle, who was behind the Sweet Tooth series on Netflix.

Originally created by Yusuki Tomino, Mobile Suit Gundam has an interesting twist with the mech genre in that it tells actual dramatic war stories with the backdrop of giant robots fighting for their specific factions.

While there is the original timeline of the Universal Century, Gundam has managed to reinvent itself constantly over the years by introducing alternate timelines with different Gundam and political climates like with Gundam Wing, Iron-Blooded Orphans, and Witch from Mercury.

It’s not clear what story the live-action movie is going to tell, but it could go either way. They could either tell a pocket story that takes place in the Universal Century (which has been done before), or they can start their own unique timeline which guarantees creative liberty and the chance to establish a new Gundam continuity.

Of course, the franchise makes most of its bank with model kits, so fans should expect some new toys to come with the film.

No release date has been set for the live-action Gundam movie, but it is set to hit theaters soon.
