Though everyone knows all about Team Avatar in Avatar: The Last Airbender, the show is also full of memorable characters. Aang’s mentor in the Air Temples before he ran away was Monk Gyatso, and though he wasn’t in the main trailer, a new spot does have him talking to Aang.

Gyatso had a pretty minimal role in the original series, but it’s suspected that he’s going to have an expanded role in the live-action series. Though we only got to see the aftermath of the Airbender genocide in the anime, the trailer does suggest that we could finally see the Airbenders fighting back when the Fire Nation decides to attack them.
Though a lot of fans are excited for the release of the live-action series, some are worried that original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino had decided to exit the show pre-production. We don’t know what kind of beef they had with Netflix at the time, but at least they’re now working with Avatar Studios with an animated movie and a series about the next Avatar after Korra.
Going back to this live-action adaptation though, fans are still weary from M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation; but it does seem that the showrunners want to emphasize to audiences how much more they respect the source material this time around.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see until the series premieres. Catch Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix when it comes out Feb. 26.
