HBO Officially Announces Lanterns Series from Watchmen and Ozark Showrunners

It’s no mystery that 2011’s Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds was a critical flop. There had been several attempts at rebooting the franchise over the years to no success, but now it looks like things are finally starting to move forward at HBO.

Just in, we have an official announcement for Lanterns from Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and comic writer Tom King. Check this out:

According to Deadline, the show will focus on new Green Lantern recruit John Stewart as he is partnered up with the more seasoned Lantern Hal Jordan. Together, the two intergalactic cops will be drawn to a “dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

Though Zack Snyder was never allowed to fully establish his new Green Lantern for the DCEU, it’s said that this Lanterns series will be incorporated into the new DC that James Gunn is going to establish with Superman next year.

The series was said to have undergone several changes in tone, and was at one point supposed to focus on more obscure Lanterns like Guy Gardner and Alan Scott; but now it looks like the show is going to focus on two of the most popular incarnations of the character.

So far, no cast has been announced for the series, but it would be great if they could establish a new Green Lantern Corps. as well as the existence of the other Lanterns in the spectrum. Personally, I was hoping for a big-budget film, but we’ll have to wait and see how the TV series is received.

No release date has been set for Lanterns, but we should expect a premiere on Max sometime in the next few years.
