Kiernan Shipka may have played a child of dysfunctional parents in Mad Men, but she also had a set of quirky parents in Wildflower. The film has just released on Hulu, and we have a trailer showcasing this unique coming-of-age dramedy.

Here’s the official description for the movie:
Based on a true story, WILDFLOWER is a coming-of-age film that follows Bea Johnson from birth to graduation as she navigates life with two intellectually disabled parents and an extended family who can’t quite agree on the best way to help.
Besides Shipka in the lead role, the film has also managed to cast stars including Alexandra Daddario, Jean Smart, Reid Scott, and Brad Garrett.
While Mad Men and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina had Shipka’s character coming-of-age as well, this is probably one of the few depictions where we actually get to see her as more of a normal young woman. Then again, there’s still nothing normal about her situation.
Just by looking at the trailer, Wildflower kind of feels like a more lighthearted I Am Sam, only the struggle of the character is purely to figure out what they want to do with themselves considering the condition of their parents; I guess I Am Sam had a lot more drama to explore, what with the parental relationship being shaken up by the legal system in that film.
Either way, I’m a fan of Shipka, and I’m excited to see her in more projects down the line.
Wildflower is now streaming on Hulu.
