It’s been more than a decade since we last saw Obi-Wan Kenobi in theaters, but Ewan McGrego is coming back for his own Disney+ series later this May.
With the show expected to delve really deep into the character after the events of Revenge of the Sith, there is also going to be a lens poked at the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin. In fact, writer Joby Harold says that it’s his connection with Anakin that actually defines Obi-Wan as a character. He tells Entertainment Weekly:
“Obi-Wan is defined by his past to a pretty great degree… I mean, Obi-Wan and Anakin share so much screen time together. They’re so close that everything that he’s experienced and everything that happened with Anakin cannot help but define him. And we meet a man who’s very much defined by that history, whether he wants to be or not.”
While the series is called Obi-Wan Kenobi, a lot of fans are also expecting to see a lot of Darth Vader too. While the entire Prequel Trilogy is all about the fall of Anakin Skywalker, there are some fans who are interested in seeing Vader in his actual prime—before he was pushed to the light by his son.
Admittedly, the Disney+ Star Wars shows had stumbled with The Book of Boba Fett, but with Obi-Wan being a richer character (sorry, Boba fans), we should expect a well-rounded story that wouldn’t depend too much on fan service to keep people interested.
Catch Obi-Wan Kenobi when its first two episodes premiere on May 27 on Disney+.
