Ever since the release of Everything Everywhere All at Once, it seems that Hollywood veteran Ke Huy Quan is finally getting the recognition he deserves. After some small supporting roles with Disney, he’s now ready to be the lead.
Check him out in this first trailer for Universal’s Love Hurts:
Here’s the description for the movie:
Ke Huy Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a realtor working the Milwaukee suburbs, where ‘For Sale’ signs bloom. Gable receives a crimson envelope from Rose (Oscar® winner Ariana DeBose; West Side Story, Argylle), a former partner-in-crime that he had left for dead. She’s not happy.
Now, Marvin is thrust back into a world of ruthless hitmen, filled with double-crosses and open houses turned into deadly warzones. With his brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu; Tomb Raider, Warcraft), a volatile crime lord, hunting him, Marvin must confront the choices that haunt him and the history he never truly buried.
With Quan playing a former hitman who is just trying to live his life in peace before his past comes back to haunt him—it really does seem like Love Hurts is just another John Wick-type property, and it probably is. After all, it’s also being produced by David Leitch who produced the John Wick movies. The movie is also being directed by longtime stunt coordinator JoJo Eusebio, who has also worked on movies like Black Panther, The Avengers, Deadpool 2, and—surprise, surprise—John Wick.
Quan himself has also had a history with action filmmaking, so it’s great that he’s able to show off his skills in this film. Though he may be best known for his child acting days in films like Indiana Jones 2 and The Goonies, it’s great to see him actually take on action roles—while at the same time embracing his cutesy wimp onscreen persona.
Catch Love Hurts when it comes to cinemas on Feb. 7.
