First Tease for Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2

Johnny Cage in undoubtedly one of the poster boys for the Mortal Kombat franchise, and though he didn’t appear in the first film, he’s now set to appear in the sequel played by none other than The Boys’ Karl Urban.

Production is currently ongoing for the movie, and we have our first tease of Urban’s Cage. Check this out:

We don’t have any details on Urban’s version of Johnny Cage yet, but the character is known to be the main source of comic relief from the franchise, being a washed up action star that somehow finds himself in the middle of a dangerous martial arts tournament.

Originally, Cage was supposed to be a parody of actor Jean-Claude Van Damme in the movie Bloodsport, but since Midway Games couldn’t get the rights, they decided to push forward with a dangerous martial arts game which turned into Mortal Kombat.

Eventually MK did get to collaborate with Van Damme with Mortal Kombat 1 making Van Damme a playable character via an alternate skin for—you guessed it—Johnny Cage.

As for Urban’s version of the character, it’s unclear how he’s going to be approaching Cage. So far his most significant role as Billy Butcher is a far cry from the cocky moron that is Johnny Cage, but hopefully the movie manages to keep true to the core of the character in that he’s pretty funny and arrogant, but he’s definitely a good guy at heart.

The Mortal Kombat sequel is yet to receive a release date.
