Johnny Depp Makes His Comeback with French-Speaking Film, Jeanne du Barry

Johnny Depp had to take a break from movies for a while after a very public trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, but now he’s set to return with a rather different movie from his usual blockbuster.

Check out the trailer for Jeanne du Barry starring Depp as Louis XV:

Here’s the film synopsis:

The life of Jeanne Bécu who was born as the illegitimate daughter of an impoverished seamstress in 1743 and went on to rise through the Court of Louis XV to become his last official mistress.

The film is actually set to open the Cannes Film Festival, and should shine a spotlight on Depp who hasn’t been doing any big films since Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. He had even lost the Grindelwald gig to Mads Mikkelsen in Secrets of Dumbledore, but du Barry does allow Depp the opportunity to take on a new character we’ve never seen before.

I just wonder what French-speaking audience members will think of his French in the movie.

Though Depp is undoubtedly the biggest thing about this movie, I’m actually impressed by the woman who plays the titular character Maïwenn. As it turns out, Maïwenn is also the director of the film, and though she is primarily an actress, she already has several other movies with her at the helm, starting from 2006.

I’m just excited to see how she can match up to a megastar like Depp on the big screen.

Jeanne du Barry comes to cinemas on May 16.
