If any actor has been blunt about his experience with Star Wars, it’s John Boyega. Besides battling a toxic fandom, Boyega has been talking about how Lucasfilm has shunned Finn’s character toward the end of the Sequel Trilogy. While Boyega has been sounding bitter, he does say that he’s still willing to make a comeback to the franchise down the line.
When asked by Yahoo! if he was willing to make a comeback to Star Wars, Boyega replied, “I’m a Mandalorian fan, so Lucasfilm is doing very well with the TV shows… An animated show would be dope! We could do it from home.”
As for the content of this animated series, Boyega says that he was interested in Colin Trevorrow’s original plans for Episode IX called Star Wars: Duel of the Fates. Trevorrow’s original plan for Finn was to lead a stormtrooper uprising in the old city of Coruscant, and it was revealed in concept art. Boyega says about the leaked images:
“I think Colin Trevorrow was going to tell that story. That image of Finn with the blue flag, and you have the AT-ATs lined up with tribal marks, and the stormtroopers take off their helmets. That would have been sick! That would have been dope, man, hands down… I’m a Mandalorian fan, so Lucasfilm is doing very well with the TV shows. An animated show would be dope! We could do it from home.”
Though Lucasfilm may have parted ways with Trevorrow, I thought his plans for Episode IX were ultimately better than what we got in The Rise of Skywalker. Sure there were some problems with the story, but with a little tweaking, we could have gotten something more organic to the story, compared to TROS which just seemed to retcon everything from The Last Jedi.
Who knows, if Marvel’s What If…? does great, maybe we can have an animated Legends show for Star Wars, and it would be the closest we got to Trevorrow’s Duel of the Fates happening.
For now, fans wait for the premiere of The Mandalorian Season 2 on Disney+ which takes place on Oct. 30.
