A lot of people were scratching their heads when it was announced that Joaquin Phoenix would be starring in a spinoff focused solely on the Batman rogue Joker; but one teaser and a movie later, Joker was a smash hit for the DCEU. Though the film feels pretty self-contained, there have been rumblings of a sequel, and Phoenix tells fans what he knows about the project.
Talking to The Playlist, Phoenix was asked about the status of a Joker follow-up, to which he replies:
“I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to – you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”
With Joker making more than a billion in the box office with its moderate budget, a lot of fans would think that DC would want to lean in on these experimental, director driven projects. Flash forward to now, and we’re just getting follow-ups of established heroes, but nothing close to another project that’s like Joker.
While I don’t really need Phoenix to come back, it would be interesting to see his Joker get pitted against the Dark Knight. After all, while Phoenix’s Clown Prince of Crime did become some kind of underclass hero, we have yet to see him become the mastermind criminal that can match the World’s Greatest Detective.
A Joker sequel hasn’t been officially announced, but hopefully we can get some kind of update when DC FanDome kicks off on Oct. 16. Catch The Batman when it hits theaters on March 4, 2022.
