Joaquin Phoenix is a Horribly Clever Tyrant in Latest Napoleon Trailer

Joaquin Phoenix may have played a nervous wreck in Joker and Beau is Afraid, but he’s set to become one of history’s most legendary figures in Ridley Scott’s upcoming Napoleon biopic. The film is set to come out later in November, and we have a new trailer showcasing the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Watch this:

The official description reads:

Directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay by David Scarpa, “Napoleon” stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and military leader. The film is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby. The film captures Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.

With Ridley Scott at the helm of the film, we should always expect some kind of dazzling visuals to go along with the drama around the characters. It’s also great that we get to see him reunited with Phoenix, who was infamously the villain of Scott’s Gladiator starring Russell Crowe.

Besides Phoenix who we know is going to deliver a powerhouse performance, we also see a lot of Vanessa Kirby who looks to be the woman behind a lot of Napoleon’s successes. Though we see Bonaparte win all of these battles with his strategic expertise, it’s going to be fascinating to see how he’s going to be manipulated by someone who doesn’t even have to wield a weapon.

Napoleon is set to come to theaters on Nov. 22.
