When the first promos for Sonic the Hedgehog came out, a lot of people thought that the anatomy of the character looked terrible; but some fans were holding out for a full trailer before they would judge. The thing is, Paramount has just released their first trailer for Sonic, and well… it’s something.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
As expected, the trailer has been poorly received, and it currently has 258k dislikes versus 169k likes. Besides the weird choice to have a Sonic trailer feature the song Gangster’s Paradise, a lot of people are uneasy with the attempt to make Sonic look photo-real.
If there’s one thing that people love about the trailer though, it’s Jim Carrey’s villain Dr. Robotnik. It looks like he’s going to be changing appearance throughout the whole movie, slowly turning into the classic “Eggman” look, but some a weary that the final clip of him in the trailer is actually just going to be featured in an after-credits scene.
If anything, the movie still has time to change people’s minds. Everyone hated Will Smith’s look in Aladdin, but are now onboard. Personally, I thought Sonic’s look in my first watch was jarring, but I kind of warmed up to it the more I watched the trailer.
Sonic the Hedgehog comes out this November.
