The Hunger Games universe continues to expand, and fans are getting another prequel that focuses on a young Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson) during the first Quarter Quell.
Several characters are expected to appear like a younger BeeTee, but it’s also been confirmed that the story is also going to include a young Plutarch Heavensbee—who was played by the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the original quadrilogy.
With casting still underway, a rumor from insider @DanielRPK (via @HollywoodHandle) says that Jesse Plemons (Civil War, Breaking Bad) is currently being eyed to play a younger Plutarch. No official confirmation has been made yet, but a lot of people think that he may be a great choice for the role.
Though Plemons is no doubt a solid actor, I am on the side that wants to see Hoffman’s son Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza, Saturday Night) take on the role. He’s closer to Plutarch’s age in the story (20s) and Plemons is already a few years shy of turning 50.
Plutarch may have been an architect of the uprising in the original films, but in this timeline he’s only a cameraman for the games. The book goes into detail about his role in the story, but he’s only one of several adults that appear in Katniss Everdeen’s eventual hero’s journey in the next couple of decades.
Admittedly, no cast members have been confirmed yet, but The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is aiming for a release in theaters on Nov. 20, 2026.
