Jason Statham Teams Up with Suicide Squad’s David Ayer in Trailer for The Beekeeper

Director David Ayer may be spending his time online trying to get his cut of Suicide Squad released, but he’s also had some different projects cooking on the side. This January, he has a film with action star Jason Statham called The Beekeeper, and a new trailer has just dropped.

Watch this:

Before you start thinking this is a spinoff of the Candyman franchise, here’s the official synopsis for the film:

In The Beekeeper, one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.”

Besides Statham, the film also includes the likes of Jeremy Irons, Minnie Driver, Emmy Raver-Lampman, and Josh Hutcherson.

Though the movie is expected to be this explosive action film with Jason in the spotlight, it does shed a light on the very real problem on online phishing and the elder people being their main victims. Of course, stories about rogue agents with special skills are a dime-a-dozen, but with Ayer’s penchant for putting his knowledge of the streets in his films, I’m wondering how he would bring any of those elements into The Beekeeper.

I’m just hoping this generates enough buzz to give people a second look at the release of Ayer’s version of Suicide Squad because the last Ayer project that got buzz was Netflix’s Bright and that came out more than half a decade ago.

Watch out for The Beekeeper when it hits cinemas on Jan. 12.
