With James Gunn going all out with the R-rating of The Suicide Squad, a lot of people are wondering if we’ll ever get that kind of insane action in a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Too bad for gore aficionados because Gunn wants to keep his Marvel franchise family friendly.
Talking to Collider, Gunn says:
“I would never do an R-rated Guardians of the Galaxy… It just wouldn’t be what that show is. It’s for families, and old people love it. It’s more like a fairy tale. And I think it is completely, that is what it is. Suicide Squad is something very different than that, and the stakes are different. All of that is different.”
Though a lot of people thought that The Suicide Squad was very true to James Gunn’s brand, he doesn’t think that it applies for every other franchise, stating that he wouldn’t make an R-rated Shazam! movie or a PG-13 Deadpool. It all really depends on the project.
It’s funny that Gunn should say that Guardians is a family friendly franchise, seeing that it’s probably the most vulgar of the MCU films, with the swearing and humor. That being said, they are very safe to watch with kids, and that’s probably part of why the franchise is one of Marvel’s most successful.
