One of the biggest disappointments from last year was when Disney had decided to fire James Gunn from the helm of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after the resurfacing of some less-than-decent tweets. Fans have been campaigning endlessly for Disney to bring Gunn back, and it looks like they’re getting their wish.
According to Deadline, Disney has officially re-hired Gunn to direct GotG Vol. 3. The site writes:
After the firing, Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn met with Gunn on multiple occasions to discuss the situation. Persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation after, Horn decided to reverse course and reinstate Gunn.
Before Gunn was fired, Guardians 3 was said to be setting the tone for Phase 4 of the MCU, so you can imagine how chaotic it looked after Gunn was unceremoniously fired. With him back on board though, things are looking as good as they did.
One big question in everyone’s mind is what’s going to happen to Gunn’s Suicide Squad reboot for the DCEU. As it turns out, Marvel will let Gunn finish his work on SS2 first, then he could come back on board to direct Guardians 3. This may mean a longer wait for Guardians, but at least we’re happy knowing that Gunn will be back at the helm to finish what he started.
No release date has been set for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but The Suicide Squad is set to come out Aug. 6, 2021.
