It Takes Two from Hazelight Studios was such a hit when it came out back in 2021 that it managed to win Game of the Year when it was released. News had come out that an adaptation was being developed back in 2022, and now we have a small update.
In a recent interview with IGN, Sonic the Hedgehog writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller confirm that the It Takes Two adaptation could push forward in the next year. Casey explains, “I was going to say, we’ve already written a script for It Takes Two, which hopefully we’ll get some good news on moving forward in the next year.”
Not much details have been revealed about the project, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is attached as a producer, and some speculate that he could be starring in the movie—which could possibly be just a voice role like Super Pets.
For context, It Takes Two is cooperative platformer game which follows the story of a couple who are on the midst of a separation, but suddenly find themselves transformed into toys and must cooperate to get themselves back to normal.
The interesting thing about the game is that there is no single player option available, and players will either have to connect with someone online or play with someone beside them. The world consist of several cleverly designed levels that will force players to communicate and cooperate.
Top that off with a potential divorce storyline, and you have the makings of a hit game with a meta-narrative that goes hand-in-hand with the gameplay.
No release date has been set for It Takes Two, but maybe we can get something by 2026. In the meantime, you can check out Casey and Miller’s work with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 now in theaters.
