Hugh Jackman Addresses Marvel Casting Someone Else as Wolverine

Despite Hugh Jackman ending his tenure as Wolverine back in 2017, a lot of fans want him to come back for the role; especially now that Marvel Studios has earned the rights back for X-Men. Too bad for them though, because it looks like Jackman is definitely done.

Talking to The Daily Beast, Jackman expressed that he would have loved to stay if the Marvel deal had happened earlier, but for now, he’s looking forward to someone else running with Wolverine. He says:

“I knew it was the right time for me to leave the party—not just for me, but for the character. Somebody else will pick it up and run with it. It’s too good of a character not to. It’s kind of like, you’re on your way home and your friend rings you and goes, Oh, dude, a new DJ just came on and the music is awesome, are you going to come back? And you say, Sounds good but… no. They’re fine with someone else.”

With the entire Fox timeline messed up since Days of Future Past, I’m actually looking forward to an updated X-Men team that would be canon with the MCU. We don’t know how mutants would be introduced this time, but I don’t think it’s realistic to have Magneto be a survivor of the Holocaust. The story will have to ‘update’ his source of trauma to ensure he won’t be too old of a man when the X-Men clash with him.

As for Jackman, he did a fantastic job as Wolverine, but I’m open to Marvel giving us a more comic-accurate Logan—a middle-aged, short, and burly man. I mean, I didn’t know what was missing with Spider-Man until we got Tom Holland’s version; now I want to see Marvel have a crack at forming the new X-Men.

We don’t know when the X-Men will make a return to the MCU, but it’s likely they’ll come in on Phase 5 in 2022.
