2006’s High School Musical was a phenomenon no one could have anticipated, and Disney hasn’t managed to make as memorable of a TV musical as that movie. Just in, we have a new trailer for a movie called World’s Best, which will have a young studios boy pursuing rap. I guess it’s kind of a musical?
Check this out:
The synopsis reads:
A 12-year-old mathematics genius Prem Patel, in the midst of navigating the tumultuous hardships of adolescence, discovers his recently deceased father was a famous rapper and immediately sets out to pursue a career for himself as a rap superstar.
While his actions may appear reckless and the quickest way for him to lose everything, Prem, empowered by imaginative hip-hop music-fueled fantasies where he performs with his father, is determined to find out if hip-hop truly is in his DNA. As his father always used to say, “the world’s best never rest”.
The film is produced by Thomas Kail, who is best known for his work on the mega-hit musical Hamilton. While I don’t expect World’s Best to make Hamilton numbers, I think it would be a great take on the genre, and could encourage other kids to check out rapping.
Then again, it could be High School Musical big, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. With Disney+ seemingly relying everything on their Marvel and Star Wars IP, it would be great to see some classic Disney Channel originals come to the platform.
Catch World’s Best when it premieres on Disney+ on June 23.
