Shrek and Kung Fu Panda have already put a cap in their stories, and now DreamWorks is building up to the conclusion of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. As promised, the first trailer for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has finally dropped:
Here’s the official synopsis:
Now chief and ruler of Berk alongside Astrid, Hiccup has created a gloriously chaotic dragon utopia. When the sudden appearance of female Light Fury coincides with the darkest threat their village has ever faced, Hiccup and Toothless must leave the only home they’ve known and journey to a hidden world thought only to exist in myth. As their true destines are revealed, dragon and rider will fight together—to the very ends of the Earth—to protect everything they’ve grown to treasure.
There were rumors going around last year that the movie was going to deal with the disappearance of the dragons. Based on Hiccup’s narration, it looks like they will have gone for a while. Either way, we still see an older Hiccup alongside Toothless, so it’s possible that we’ll see them reunite at some point in the film.
We also get an official name for the blue-eyed white dragon that we see in the poster. Unlike Toothless, a Night Fury, this one is a Light Fury, and it looks like it has the power to teleport. It also seems like the villain (named Grimmel) is some kind of Night Fury hunter, and the Light Fury will be his prized possession.
Unlike other DreamWorks franchises, I actually like how mature the stories of How to Train Your Dragon have grown since the first film. It was very much like Harry Potter in a sense that we got to grow up along with Hiccup on his journey. Hopefully this film brings the HTTYD franchise the fantastic end that it deserves.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World comes out March 1, 2019.
