Fans online have been raving about Nimona after it dropped on Netflix, but come August, we have a different animated film coming with all kinds of crazy magical creatures.
The Monkey King is set to release next month, and we just got a new trailer featuring the voices of Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley) and Bowen Yang (Nora from Queens):
The official description reads:
Inspired by an epic Chinese tale, THE MONKEY KING is an action-packed family comedy that follows a charismatic Monkey (Jimmy O. Yang) and his magical fighting Stick on an epic quest for victory over 100 demons, an eccentric Dragon King (Bowen Yang), and Monkey’s greatest foe of all —his own ego!
The movie is based on the Chinese classic Journey to the West, which tells the story of the Monkey King a.k.a. Sun Wukong (or Son Goku for the Japanese version). The story and characters have been adapted time and again through all the different kind of mediums, and it looks like the Netflix movie is going to be telling the legend through a 3D-animated Disney-fied lens.
The film is directed by Anthony Stacchi who’s probably best known for his work on the animated film The Boxtrolls. He hasn’t had any huge animation project since then, but hopefully The Monkey King manages to tell a new spin on a story that’s been told countless times over the last few hundred years.
The Monkey King premieres on Netflix on Aug. 18.
