Barbie’s Greta Gerwig to Reboot Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix

Barbie’s Greta Gerwig to Reboot Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix

The Chronicles of Narnia movies from the mid-00s were direct results of the hype around the Lord of the Rings movies, and though The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe was well-received, the franchise kind of just slowly fizzled out in the box office.

In true Hollywood fashion though, Narnia is now primed for a reboot at Netflix, and they’ve chosen none other than Barbie director Greta Gerwig to take the helm. According to The New Yorker, Gerwig currently has a deal to adapt C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia for the streaming giant, and she is set to direct at least two movies in the reboot.

We don’t have much details about the films yet, but hopefully this time Netflix can manage to keep the quality of the films consistent, as the first film series had received flak for the decrease in quality as each entry went along.

Looking at Gerwig’s career though, Barbie is probably her biggest movie to date. Before this movie, she had been known for her work on Lady Bird and Little Women, but she hasn’t tried out any huge action-fantasy IP yet. Hopefully when Barbie releases, we can have a good handle on if Gerwig can pull of a big-budget film. If anything, she’s already had an excellent track run so far, and if Barbie manages to wow audiences, I won’t be so worried about her taking on Narnia.

No release date has been announced for The Chronicles of Narnia on Netflix, but you can watch out for Gerwig’s Barbie when it comes to cinemas on July 21.
