Though SDCC 2018 came with a lot of trailer reveals, probably the best one that came out was for Godzilla: King of Monsters. Everyone is hyped to see the giant Kaiju clash next year, and a new image has been released online that gives us the sense of scale for King Ghidorah.

Check him out:

By the time we meet Ghidorah in the film, he’s gone the way of Megatron and has been frozen in a block of ice for several millennia. We know that he eventually breaks out, but having this as a teaser is fantastic. It’s going to be a slow burn all the way up to the film’s release.

Though I thought that Gareth Edwards‘ Godzilla from 2014 needed a lot of improvement, I think that the film does a lot of great work with handling the scale of the monsters. Godzilla feels tremendously massive, and it’s terrifying to see what kind of damage happens when the Kaiju clash in a city area.

With the sequel, it looks like the film is going to rely on more familiar monsters for the film. One gripe that people had with the 2014 film was that no one knew who the MUTO were, and they were so many giant monsters to choose from. King of Monsters seeks to deliver by giving us a total of four Kaiju: Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra.

Fingers crossed we get the giant turtle Gamera down the line.

Catch Godzilla: King of Monsters when it hits theaters July 21, 2018.
