Geralt of Rivia has been the central figure of the Witcher franchise, and a lot of fans are excited for him to come back for the next game which was announced by developer CD Projekt Red. As it turns out though, Geralt won’t be the central character of The Witcher IV.
This was confirmed by Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle in an interview with Fall Damage, Cockle confirms, “We know that Geralt will be part of the game, we just don’t know how much. The game won’t focus on Geralt, so it’s not about him this time. We don’t know who it’s about, I’m excited to find out!”
Immediately, a lot of fans are guessing that means the next game will focus on Geralt’s ward Ciri. With Ciri having been trained up in the Witcher ways herself, it would only be natural that she would go on her own journey with Geralt acting as a mentor popping in and out of the quest to offer help/advice.
For now, not much is known about the next Witcher game. Even Cockle said in the interview, “The Witcher IV has been announced. I can’t say anything about it.” Until CDPR decides to reveal more about it, all fans can really do is wait.
Though Ciri does seem like a good choice for the lead of the next game, it’s not impossible that CDPR will tell the story of a completely different character outside of Geralt’s circle. Who knows, maybe it can be like a Cyberpunk situation where players just get a customizable avatar like V.
No release date has been announced for The Witcher IV, but it’s expected to launch sometime soon, probably around 2025 for the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
