Sarah Michelle Gellar Officially Returning for the Buffy Sequel

Buffy the Vampire Slayer had run from 1997-2003, and with so many revivals happening here and there, it was no surprise that the world of Buffy was going to make a comeback.

According to Deadline, a revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is going to be coming to Hulu, and Sarah Michelle Gellar is onboard to reprise the role of Buffy Summers. What’s more, the pilot is going to be directed by Eternals’ Chloe Zhao, with Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face) attached to provide the script.

Though Gellar is expected to come back as Buffy, it’s said that the series is going to focus on a whole new cast of vampire hunters—but this time around, Buffy is going to have a recurring role as a possible mentor for the lead character.

There’s also a huge elephant in the room when it comes to series creator Joss Whedon who had been effectively inactive in Hollywood since misconduct allegations came out back in 2021. The report has confirmed that Whedon isn’t attached to the series in any capacity; but it’s possible he could still get a credit for creating the series.

As for Zhao, it’s said that she’s been a huge fan of the series when it was coming out, and we should expect something more grounded with her at the helm. After all, it’s kind of her thing with movies like Nomadland; even Eternals wasn’t as Marvel-y as some would expect.

No release date has been announced or the Buffy revival, but hopefully it comes out in the next few years.
