After some sci-fi work with The Martian and Alien: Covenant, director Ridley Scott is moving back to period films with The Last Duel. The movie has a star-studded cast including Jodie Comer, Adam Driver, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck, and they all appear in the first trailer.
You can check out the trailer for The Last Duel down here:
The movie is actually an adaptation of a novel by American author Eric Jager called The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France; which covers the last officially recognized judicial duel. In the 14th century, knight Jean de Carrouges (Damon) is told to duel his squire Jacques Le Gris (Driver) who Carrouges has accused of raping his wife (Comer). Should Carrouges lose the duel, his wife be burned at the stake for false accusations.
Historically, we already know who wins the duel, but if you don’t want spoilers, you should walk into the film blind.
The story of The Last Duel is said to have been an important cultural legend in France and there has been said to be fierce debate on whether Le Gris raped Lady Carrouges or not. Based on the trailer, the film kind of feels like Game of Thrones meets 2008’s Doubt.
Either way, Scott is a fantastic director, and the visuals of the film look spectacular; from the battle scenes to the intricate armor. With a solid story behind it, and a stellar cast, I’m excited to see what The Last Duel has to bring to the table.
Catch The Last Duel when it hits theaters on Oct. 15.
