James Cameron seems to be coming back to a lot of his old successful titles. Besides producing Terminator: Dark Fate, Cameron is back at the helm for a couple of Avatar sequels, the first of which comes out December of next year. Though we have no idea when we’re going to get a first preview, 20th Century Fox has given us some official concept art.

While the first movie put the main focus on the “sky” what with the flying creatures and floating mountains, this first sequel is said to focus more on the underwater world of Pandora. The actors were said to have trained to hold their breath underwater for insanely long amounts of time, and I’m curious how that’s going to come out in the actual film.
As for returning cast members, the movie is said to be bringing back leads Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) with the main protagonists said to be their children. For some reason, the movie will also be bringing back faces from the original film like Joel David Moore, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver.
There will also be some new faces in the cast as well. Playing new characters will be Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Vin Diesel, Edie Falco, Kate Winslet, David Thewlis, and more.
While I certainly thought that Avatar stands fine on its own, I’m sure Cameron wants to bank in on its franchise potential. After all, Avengers: Endgame managed to become the highest-grossing film of all time, and it wasn’t a standalone film at all.
Catch the first Avatar sequel when it hits theaters Dec. 17, 2021.
