Rogue One director Gareth Edwards may not be returning to Star Wars anytime soon, but like Colin Trevorrow before him, he’s jumped into the Jurassic World arena and is at the helm of the next movie Rebirth.
The film is led by Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey and is set to release next year. Though we don’t have a trailer yet, we do have some official photos via Entertainment Weekly. Check these out:

Though most of the movie’s plot is under wraps for now, Edwards does tell EW a bit about the approach of the movie, with them attempting to recapture the magic of the original Jurassic Park from Steven Spielberg. Edwards explains:
“I can’t speak for Universal, but it did feel like a new trilogy, in a way… I’m not sure what their plans are, but it felt like the beginning of a brand-new chapter in this franchise. To me, it’s a giant love letter to Steven Spielberg and his earlier films. There are moments in this movie that remind me very much of Jaws. It’s like little greatest hits of all those aspects of his films that I loved growing up as a child. It’s essentially a little adventure odyssey across this island, a survival story, really.”
Edwards goes on to explain that they actually shot a lot of the film on location, and they had to bring everyone into an actual jungle, with actual wild animals. He says, “We kept it quiet from the actors as they spent a whole day wading through the same area. And there were giant spiders that were poisonous and stuff on the edge of the trees. You just wouldn’t point them out if you saw them. Just keep going!”
After his work on The Creator, Edwards has solidified himself as a visual auteur around the same level of Neill Blomkamp. Admittedly, his last movie wasn’t the best when it came to plot, but fans are hopeful that Rebirth will manage to rejuvenate Edwards’ career moving forward.
