Pixar asked us if feelings had feelings in Inside Out, but now they’re going to introduce us to a world where basic elements had their own kind of society.
Check out the trailer for Elemental:
Here’s the official story description:
In a city where fire, water, land, and air residents live together, a fiery young woman and a go-with-the-flow guy discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.
The main roles of Ember and Wade are played by Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie, and the film also has supporting roles for Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Pera, and Ronnie Del Carmen.
I’ll admit, the movie kind of looks a lot like Zootopia where we’re introduced to a fantasy city with clear divides between its inhabitants. I guess what’s different is that the relationship between Ember and Wade seems to be at the very center of the film.
While Zootopia had themes about racism and bias, I think Elemental is going for a fantasy scope when it comes to tackling interracial relationships. Then again, that’s just my guess. I’m always happy to be surprised a movie decided to go a completely different direction from what I was expecting.
With a release set for June, we should get one or two more trailers for Elemental before its release. It’s a good thing that Disney has decided to bring Pixar films back to theaters as compared to Turning Red and Soul which had to fight for relevance when they were released on streaming.
Disney Pixar’s Elemental is set to hit cinemas on June 16.
