Final Trailer for Borderlands is Trying to be the Next Guardians of the Galaxy

Recently fans have realized that video game adaptations work best as series with the success of Fallout and The Last of Us, but Lionsgate and Gearbox have teamed up for their take on the colourful space wasteland of Borderlands.

The film is set to release in theatres this August, and we have a new trailer featuring a star-studded cast and a colourful sci-fi world. Check this out:

With the original Borderlands clearly taking inspiration from the world of Mad Max, the universe sets itself apart by also giving the wasteland a sci-fi twist with all kinds of aliens and special factions.

While a lot of people have been wondering what was so appealing about Borderlands as a sequel, the latest trailer does seem to confirm that LIonsgate wants this film to be their version of Guardians of the Galaxy, what with the sci-fi action scenes and silly humor.

I have to admit, it’s impressive that they managed to gather an all-star cast for the film. And Kevin Hart has basically perfected the comic relief sidekick trope, but I’m interested to see him play against type as a serious military man.

Even Jamie Lee Curtis looks like she just fits into this world as a kooky old sci-fi lady.

With no Guardians Vol. 4 in sight yet, maybe Borderlands should be a fun stand in while we wait.

Here’s the official description:

Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Black), a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to BORDERLANDS.

Catch Borderlands when it comes to cinemas on Aug. 9.
