While 101 Dalmatians had a story focused on dogs, the prequel centered on the movie’s villain Cruella de Vil is going to be focusing on fashion. The movie is going to have Emma Stone adorned in all sorts of outfits and EW gives us a good look at several of them.

Director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) had expressed that fashion is going to be very integral to the story the movie is telling. He tells EW:
“We’re in a fashion world… That made it much more complicated, because everybody’s going to have their fashion lens on as well. [We] run the risk of it taking you out of the film if you’re not buying what they’re selling.”
To bring the costumes to life, the movie had also hired Oscar-winning designer Jenny Beavan who had worked on Mad Max: Fury Road and A Room with a View. The setting of 1970s London was also picked so that the film would ‘immediately set a tone’ when it comes to fashion.
While the Disney live-action films have not really been critical darlings, they have always been applauded for their production value, and Cruella just oozes it. I’m just hoping that Disney is fine giving us a tragic character rather than trying to make her a secret victim like they did with Maleficent.
Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. “Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.
Catch Cruella when it hits theaters and Disney+ on May 28.
